Abstract

Crime is one of the most important and influential components of economic growth. As crime increases, investment risk increases and economic growth decreases. In addition to their direct effects in a geographical area, crimes can have indirect effects on other neighboring areas. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to investigate crime in the center and its impact on the growth of suburban areas. For this purpose, Tehran province is considered as the center and 30 provinces as the suburbs. Crime variables include violent crimes and ordinary thefts, which have been studied on the economic growth of other provinces in the period 1998-2020 using the panel data method. The results of the present study show that the effects of crime on the economic growth of the provinces are different according to the type of crime index. The study of the effect of violent crime index on economic growth showed that the increase in this category of crimes in Tehran province has a positive and significant effect on economic growth in other provinces of the country. The rate of ordinary thefts also has different effects on the economic growth of other provinces; In this way, thefts from shops, commercial centers and government places have had a negative effect on the economic growth of other provinces. While some other types of ordinary thefts such as burglary, motorcycle theft and livestock theft have had positive effects on the economic growth of other provinces.
